PokerStars to Celebrate Sunday Million Anniversary 21 Mar

A 15th anniversary of anything is significant, but in the world of poker, the occurrence of anything happening for 15 years in a row is rare. PokerStars has it, though, with its famous Sunday Million tournament, which turns 15 this year.

In celebration, PokerStars will host the aptly-named Sunday Million 15th Anniversary tournament. It will happen on Sunday, March 21, but there are several unique features to this one that don’t occur in the weekly tournament itself. The most important feature is the $12.5M guarantee.

Tournament Details

The basic concept is to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Sunday Million with a bigger tournament than usual. Satellites are aplenty for players to win their entries, which are quite in demand because of the $12.5M guarantee on the prize pool.

The historically normal buy-in of $215 will be in place, and the tournament will begin on Sunday, March 21. But that is where the normalcy ends.

This Sunday Million will be a two-day affair with late registration that extends to Monday, March 22.

Finally, in addition to a barrage of satellites to the March 21st Sunday Million, PokerStars will be giving away $500K worth of tickets…for free.

Sunday Million Ticket Machine

This is the part where players can win their tickets, as PokerStars will be giving away $500,000 worth of them between now and March 21.

Any player can participate by going to their “Challenges” window to opt in. This will provide a list of daily challenges for each player to win up to three entries per day to a daily ticket machine draw. The completion of each challenge will provide the details of the draw time for that day.

The challenges will include things like:

  • Play 250 cash game hands = earn 1 ticket machine draw entry
  • Play 250 Zoom hands = earn 1 entry
  • Play 7 SNGs = earn 1 entry
  • Play 7 Spin & Gos = earn 1 entry
  • Knock a player out in an MTT = earn 1 entry

As mentioned, a player can win up to three entries per day for the free ticket draws.

PokerStars has put in $500K worth of Sunday Million tickets into the draws for just this reason.

Special Spin & Gos

A Spin & Go on PokerStars differs from the tradition sit-n-go in that it plays fast and has a random prize pool aspect to it.

Essentially, a player buys in for a specific amount – in the case of the special Spin & Gos for this anniversary promotion, the buy-ins are $4. Sometimes, the prize pool is based upon that prize pool, but often the randomness increases the prize pool. The increase can be up to 10,000x the buy-in and, these days, up to $1M.

The other unique feature of the Spin & Go is that it is three-handed and plays with a hyper-turbo structure. There is no time for players to stall and fold too often. It’s fast, exciting, and full of prizes. These special Sunday Million versions provide extra spin-up options. Players can win big cash prizes as described above but also seats to the $215 Sunday Million and satellite tickets for that event.

Chances of Winning the Sunday Million

The weekly tournament has been a staple for poker players since it debuted in 2006. Players of all stripes and bankrolls have won the Sunday Million through the years.

Last year, PokerStars hosted the 14th Anniversary Sunday Million and put a $12.5M guarantee on it. That one, too, offered late registration up until the start of Day 2. And in the end, the numbers were impressive:

  • 93,016 total entries, including 60,898 unique players and 32,118 reentries
  • $18,602,300 total prize pool
  • “AAAArthur” of Brazil won it for $1,192,802

Not only did this player win life-changing money, he /she had not won more than $91 at a time playing online poker at PokerStars…before that Sunday Million. Better yet, AAAArthur won his/her entry into that Sunday Million through an $11 satellite.

Of course, there will be Sunday Million veterans in the field. For example, the only player to have ever won three Sunday Million tournaments in the past 15 years is Artem “veeea” Vezhenkov of Russia, who will most likely be in the crowd. There are also 17 players who have won the Sunday Million twice, like Rob “robtinnion” Tinnion and Jesper “KipsterDK” Hougaard.

All of that to say there is more than one week for players to win their seats or qualify on the cheap. This weekend might be a good time to get started.
