Calgary gaming enthusiasts will have a new place to play soon, as development continues on the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino in the city’s northeastern corner. The new complex will have a casino, race track, and a restaurant/bar area.
The new casino building is already well underway, the Calgary Herald reports. Construction began in spring 2014 and continues even as winter comes to the greater Calgary area. Tim Caldwell, who is the Vice President at Chandos Construction, told the Herald that the casino is enclosed and that constructions crews continue to build out the interior of the casino, which is projected to include the aforementioned restaurant, bar, and lounge area. At present, little is known about the type of restaurant options or live entertainment at the casino. Gamers will be able to place off-track bets and play with 550 gaming machines at the facility.
Charles E. Coon and Sons is tasked with consulting on the building of the race track, according to the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino website. Coon and Sons specializes in the design, construction, and maintenance of horse racing tracks.
The Century Downs Racetrack and Casino is located just north of Calgary’s city limits and 4.5 miles away from the city’s airport. Poised to capture traffic from throughout the northern and northwestern Calgary area, the casino is also positioned close to the main highway between Edmonton and Calgary. This will allow Century Downs to capture traffic from both cities as Edmonton gamers look for a new place to try their luck. The casino is owned by Colorado-based Century Casinos, which also owns the Century Casino Edmonton and the existing Century Casino in Calgary.
The new casino complex is set to open in the Spring of 2015; the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino website does not list a specific anticipated opening date as of yet. Once that date is released, we’ll provide an update here.
