Online Casino Players Avoid These Tricks of Land-Based Casinos

Land-based casino operators use a variety of methods to lure customers to their establishments and keep them there. Some even use psychologists and research to find out how best to manipulate customers into spending more time in casinos and gambling more than they intended. Interestingly, though, online casino operators are scrutinized intensely for their advertising methods. Even so, online casino advertising can only attract a player to a website and attempt to use attractive visuals to keep them there.

An online casino is much more conducive to limited gambling, as there are no physical constrictions keeping players on a particular site. Internet operators also make it easy for players to set limits on their gambling – by dollar amount or time – and these limits are simple to enforce.

Let’s take a look at the many tricks that land-based casinos use to manipulate customers, keeping in mind that online casinos do not use these methods.

  1. No Clocks or Windows

Casinos famously do not hang clocks on their walls. The simple reasoning is that if people don’t know what time it is, they will gamble more freely. Without a clock to remind them of the time, where they might need to be, or how long they’ve been in the casino, they will continue gambling.

The lack of windows has much of the same effect, as customers cannot see the day turn to night. They also cannot see if the weather is beautiful and that they are missing out on it by being in the casino.

  1. Free Alcohol

One of the most common ways that casinos induce players to stay is to offer free drinks. This doesn’t happen in all casinos, but many of them do give free alcohol to players who are gambling. This ensures that they keep gambling until their drinks arrive and possibly continue gambling to obtain another free beverage.

  1. Casino Floor Layouts

Frequent casino visitors might notice that most casinos are designed in a confusing manner. There are few straight lines to get from the entrance to a restaurant, or from the check-in desk to the buffet. The paths through the casinos are winding and lead around many table games and slot machines.

The designs are the result of consultation with specialists who use psychology to take the customers in directions that distract them from their destination. Some of the slot machines with the brightest lights and more alluring soundtracks are placed in the natural path of customers. They are then more likely to take a break at that machine or remember it to return to it later.

  1. Casino Carpets and Colors

There are two main reasons that casinos use very bright and design-filled carpeting.

The many colorful designs are one way to hide things like food and drink spills, cigarette burns, and anything else that might end up on the floor. This isn’t to say that casinos don’t clear their floors. But it is a way to hide stains that vacuums can’t erase.

The bright designs are also a way to keep customers alert. It is more difficult to become tired or lulled into boredom when the carpet is so “loud” and displeasing to the eyes.

  1. Playing with Chips and Tickets, Not Cash

Casinos no longer enable VLTs or slot machines to pay in cash. Rather, customers receive tickets that they must take to a redemption machine or to the cashier desk. The same goes for table games customers. They trade cash for chips to play and then must visit the cashier to exchange chips for cash. By rerouting customers through the maze to cash out, they are more likely to play again before they obtain their cash.

  1. Big Celebrations for Big Wins

Many slot machines and VLTs are enabled with loud sounds and lights that erupt when a player wins a big payout or a jackpot. This brings attention to that machine from customers around the casino, as they come closer to see what happened. When players see someone winning big, it often inspires them to play that machine or play more to achieve that same success.

  1. Perks Offered in Real Time

Land-based casinos employ hosts and other employees to find players on the casino floor to thank them for playing and reward them with food or drink vouchers. Some are even offered hotel rooms to stay the night. This ensures that they will gamble later and return in the morning.

  1. Oxygen and Scents

Most of the reports of casinos pumping special pheromone-infused oxygen into the air are false. These myths have mostly been disproven.

However, there is a special effort to keep the air clean to help customers maintain a certain energy level. And special scents are used that offer comfort to players.
