New Game of the Week: Reel Splitter

The latest new game on Canada’s top online casinos comes from Just For The Win through its game development deal with Microgaming. Reel Splitter presents a new way of looking at a retro slot game, providing the familiarity of the fruit symbols along with the latest technology. The sounds of an old slot game mix with new features, like re-spins and stacked wilds.

Just For The Win only recently teamed up with Microgaming to provide video slot content for desktop and mobile casinos online, and the products they release keep with the retro theme of old Las Vegas. That was the case with another recent release, Rockabilly Wolves.

As noted by Just For The Win CEO Johan Persson, the game brings; “the dazzle and lavish atmosphere of the old Vegas Strip to players in Reel Splitter, our modern take on vintage slots.” He went on to note that the developers had fun working on the project, and “we can’t wait for players to experience our timeless new title.”

About Reel Splitter

The 4-reel slot is a classic take on the old casino slot machines in Las Vegas. However, technology allows it to offer a fifth reel during re-spins. The basic game offers 81 paylines, but the expanded game pays 243 ways. This is one of the many unique features of Reel Splitter.

The smooth music is a bit jazzy, easy to hear and a bit reminiscent of a live band playing background music near the casino floor.

The background setting for the game is a tiled purplish-blue wall with the patterns of the four card deck suits. The reels are surrounded by a purple and blue neon screen, and the symbols pop into place as they would on an old slot machine. That is unless the online player chooses the “quick spin” option to eliminate that slower pace.

Classic 10-J-Q-K-A symbols pepper the reels, along with the fruit – cherries, plums, kiwis, and lemons. There is also the wild symbol, free spins box, and the Reel Splitter symbol. Their payouts are as follows for all five reels:

  • Reel Splitter = 12x
  • Lemons = 8x
  • Plums = 5x
  • Kiwis = 4x
  • Cherries = 3x
  • A, K, Q, J, 10 = 2x

Betting options start as low as $0.10 and go all the way up to $100.00 per spin. The maximum payout is just under $300,000, but there is no progressive jackpot.

How to Play This Retro Slot Game

Pressing the spin button sets the game into action, and there are several things to look for besides the traditional paylines.

Most obviously, the free spins symbol is the key to a bonus round. Three of the symbols trigger eight 8 free spins, and four symbols award 16 free spins. All free spins play with the added fifth reel, which increases the number of paylines to 243.

During that bonus round, the middle reel is a stacked wild (three locked wild symbols taking up the entire reel). This then boosts the chance of winning. Wins can pay for three or more symbols from the right reel inward or the left reel outward, another way to win that is quite uncommon in online slots.

Wild symbols, whether in bonus spin play or regular base play, can substitute for all symbols except the free spin symbol.

Players will also want to see the Reel Split symbols, which only appear in the base game and pay the most of any symbol. However, those symbols don’t necessarily trigger a Reel Split re-spin. A sort of wave appears at the bottom of the screen, giving the new reel a chance to insert itself. It will then either do so and launch into the re-spin, or simply allow the player to continue with the regular game.

When a win occurs with almost any four symbols in succession, the Reel Split re-spin feature may happen. A sound wave type occurrence happens at the bottom of the screen between the second and third reels, and the new reel has a chance to insert itself there. If not, regular play continues. But if the new reel is added, it is the only one that spins while all others stay locked. This also increases the paylines from 81 to 243.

Where to Play Reel Splitter

This particular video slot is fun, bold, colourful, and offers exciting features. Reel Splitter is a high-variance slot, though, and requires some patience to get to the bonuses.

Reel Splitter was officially released on May 15 and has now been available on many online casinos for a few days. It has been a hit so far at All Slots Casino, Jackpot City, and LeoVegas.
