When it comes to international sport, Gabriela Dabrowski is flying the Canadian flag super high. She, along with Mate Pavic of Croatia won the mixed doubles in the Australian Open, but this is her second grand slam title. In fact, she won the French Open mixed doubles in 2017, making her the first Canadian woman to win such a prestigious senior grand slam.
Having reached such career heights, Dabrowski will now lead the Canadian team in a Fed Cup World Group set to take place in Romania next week. She will be joined by Toronto’s Katherine Sebov, Bianca Andreescu and Carol Zhao from Ontario.
While we cannot dispute the talent that Zhao, Sebov and Andreescu possess, our focus right now is Dabrowski; who is putting her hometown of Ottawa on the map!
Getting to Know Gabriela Dabrowski
At 25 years old, Dabrowski has an impressive list of titles under her name, but she hasn’t reached her pinnacle yet. In fact, her goal is to be the best in the world. Her win in the Australian Open has moved her up the ranks to her highest position yet – No.11. So, where did it all start for Dabrowski, affectionately known as ‘Gaby’? Well, she started playing the game when she was 7, and by eight she played her first provincial tournament.
In 2006 she played and won the Les Petits As; she was the first Canada to win this tournament. 2006 held another first for Canada as she won the Junior Orange Bowl against top-seeded Kristina Mladenovic. As you can see, Gaby has a reputation for giving Canada plenty first-ever titles, so she is a definite sure bet for your tennis bets!
The Australian Open
Gaby and Pavic didn’t drop a single set on their road to victory at the Australian Open. While she walked away victorious the start of the championships was rocky. In fact, her previous partner, who she defeated this year, Rohan Bopanna, didn’t tell her he had partnered with another player. Gaby said she found out in an article that he had partnered with Babos. After reading the article, she messaged a few players and Pavic responded. We’re so glad he responded!
