Top 6 Online Blackjack Tips for New Players

Blackjack may seem like a complicated casino table game to some. However, there are a few tips that make the game easier to absorb. Take these six blackjack tips into consideration, and the rest will be as easy as standing on a hard 20.

Learning Blackjack Online

Blackjack has an appeal for different reasons. The strategy involved in playing optimal blackjack appeals to some players, while the simplicity of basic blackjack appeals to others. For many reasons, blackjack is one of the most popular Canadian online casino games.

It is also popular online because players like to learn the game in private before going to a casino and playing in front of others. Playing online blackjack is the perfect opportunity to learn the rules and even some strategy. You can then they can walk into a casino with confidence and play with friends or anyone else at the tables.

Six Top Blackjack Tips For New Players

So, without further ado, here are our six best blackjack tips for players who are new to this casino game:

1. Play for Free First

Almost all Canadian online casino sites offer the chance to play games for free first before playing for real money. This is very beneficial for those playing new games, whether roulette, craps, baccarart, blackjack or even simply trying out a new online slot.

New blackjack players should play for free to see the table set-up, the speed of the action, the betting options, and when the dealer must stay or draw. Play at least a few hands to get the feel of the action and know how much you feel comfortable betting.

Free-play may not be an option for online casinos that offer mostly live dealer blackjack, like PlayAmo. Most of the blackjack tables are live dealer games. If there are none available for play-money, play one for the lowest possible stakes at first to get the hang of the action.

2. Never Take Insurance

A player is offered insurance when he or she has blackjack and the dealer is showing one card toward a blackjack. However, the house typically has a 6% edge on that bet, and it is not wise to play it. Insurance only guarantees that the player wins their original bet back, and that payment is not worth it. Always refuse to pay insurance!

3. Avoid Extra or Bonus Bets

Different blackjack variations will offer bonus bet options. Players can typically put a small denomination chip into a bonus circle with the potential to win a jackpot or big payout if a certain hand hits.

Some examples of bonus bets are:

  • Royal Match: King and queen must be player’s first two cards of the same suit
  • Lucky Ladies: Two queens of hearts must be the player’s cards
  • Blackjack: Player makes blackjack

The payouts for these bets can be anywhere from 10-to-1 for the typical blackjack bonus or 125-to-1 for the Lucky Ladies. The bonuses are enticing, but the casino keeps a huge edge on these bets. Players without a large bankroll will lose money faster than during any regular game by placing even a $1 bet on the bonus circle on every hand.

It is simply not a good bet, especially for beginners in blackjack.

4. Stay Away from Streak Betting

It is easy to feel lucky after a few winning hands in a row. A player might hit a few winning hands or receive blackjack twice in a row and start feeling lucky.

Keep in mind, however, that the odds on the next hand are still the same.

Players should avoid betting higher when they feel like they’re on a streak. They must recognise that a “bad streak” is just as easy to find as a “good streak” and can deplete a player’s account very quickly.

5. Learn Basic Strategy

Strategy for blackjack can become complicated. There are entire charts created for players to memorise as they play the game more frequently. But there are also some basic rules that should ALWAYS be applied and are easier to remember.

  • Split A-A and 8-8.
  • Double down on an 11 if the dealer shows 2 through 10.
  • Stand with 12 to 16 if the dealer shows 2 through 6.
  • Hit with 12-16 if the dealer shows 7 through A.

6. Keep a Cheat Sheet

One of the reasons beginners to blackjack should always play online first is to learn the rules. Furthermore, there are many charts and tables available that show the best mathematical moves for all blackjack hands. While it may be a bit embarrassing to bring that information to a live blackjack table at a casino, no one will know if a player refers to it while playing online.

Use the information to make the best decisions. In time, those rules will feel more natural.
