WPT and Playground Take WPT Montreal Online in 2021

One of most popular stops each year on the World Poker Tour is in Montreal, Quebec. And it always played out at the ideal location, Playground Poker, a club with poker as its primary focus. And the prize pools for the WPT Montreal Main Event alone always boasted of millions of dollars.

This year, however, there is no WPT Montreal at Playground Poker. In fact, there have been no live World Poker Tour events anywhere since mid-March. Playground hasn’t been authorized to host any live poker whatsoever since that same time period. Of course, the blame falls squarely on the coronavirus pandemic.

With no end to the pandemic-related closures and restrictions in sight, the World Poker Tour worked with Playground Poker to devise a solution. And as with so many other poker events in 2020, the WPT Montreal will go online with their partner, PartyPoker.

January 2021 WPT Montreal

The World Poker Tour announced it this week. In partnership with PartyPoker, the WPT Montreal Online will offer players a chance for that coveted WPT title. The tournament will require a $3,200 buy-in, two starting flights, and a $2 million guarantee on the prize pool.

  • Sunday, January 10: WPT Montreal Day 1A at 13:05 CST
  • Sunday, January 17: WPT Montreal Day 1B at 13:05 CST
  • Monday, January 18: WPT Montreal Day 2 at 13:05 CST
  • Tuesday, January 19: WPT Montreal final table at 13:05 CST

Why announce it so early?

Not only are holidays forthcoming, but the ample notice provides more than two months for players to qualify to play. With qualifiers starting at $0.01 on PartyPoker, there are many more chances to secure a seat.

Daily feeders and weekly satellites are now underway, complete with limited reentries and real names at the tables. The most anyone will pay to play in these satellites is $33, though there will be $320 mega-satellites beginning in 2021.

The WPT Montreal winner will receive a solid share of the prize pool, an official WPT Montreal winner title, his or her name on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup, and a seat into the WPT Tournament of Champions presented by Baccarat Crystal.

PartyPoker LIVE President John Duthie noted, “I can’t tell you how excited I am about WPT Montreal being played out on PartyPoker! Playground is one of my favourite places to play on the globe, and the players there are just such a great community.”

Past Eight Years of WPT Montreal

Playground Poker began teaming up with the World Poker Tour in 2012. Starting with Season 11, this is a rundown of the history of the WPT Montreal Main Event:

  • Season 11 in Nov 2012: 1,173 entries / $3,387,930 prize pool / Jonathan Roy (Canada) won it $784,101
  • Season 12 in Nov/Dec 2013: 862 entries / $2,738,435 prize pool / Derrick Rosenbarger (US) won it for $500,824
  • Season 13 in Nov 2014: 732 entries / $2,301,066 prize pool / Jonathan Jaffee (US) won it for $463,432
  • Season 14 in Nov 2015: 697 entries / $2,366,315 prize pool / Jared Mahoney (US) won it for $453,122
  • Season 15 in Nov 2016: 648 entries / $2,199,960 prize pool / Mike Sexton (US) won it for $425,980
  • Season 16 in Nov 2017: 606 entries / $2,057,370 prize pool / Maxime Heroux (Canada) won it for $403,570
  • Season 17 in Oct/Nov 2018: 792 entries / $5M prize pool / Patrick Serda (Canada) won it for $855,000
  • Season 18 in Oct/Nov 2019: 1,109 entries / $3,327,000 prize pool / Geoffrey Hum (Canada) won it for $500,000

The tournament changed its buy-ins and reentries through the years, but the feel of the event never changed. So, when Playground Poker had to cancel this year’s event, which had been scheduled from  October 29 through November 8, players were disappointed.

Playground Club Games Online

As it did earlier in 2020, Playground Poker recently introduced a way to play with fellow Playground Poker regulars online at PartyPoker.

Playground Club Games are in the “Club Games” section of the site. Players need to join with their real names and verify their identity, at which point they may join the Hold’em and Omaha tables from the $0.25/$0.50 level up to the $2.50/$5.00 games.

Reminiscent of the live poker days at Playground, there will also be a leaderboard and promotions. The current points go toward the $36K daily leaderboard.
