Kevin Martin to Lead New GGSquad on GGPoker
Canadian poker players have quite a few options when they want to play online poker. And considering that the coronavirus pandemic has shut down most live poker options for much of 2020 so far, the online version of the game has been quite a handy tool.
GGPoker has grown into a major player – so to speak – on the scene in the past few years. Its sister site, Natural8, has been popular in the Asian online poker market for years. And now, GGPoker added another well-known personality and poker player to a new group of sponsored poker pros, and Kevin Martin is excited to represent Canada as he streams his GGPoker games online.
Big Moves Started in 2019
Many Canadian poker players had heard of GGPoker in or before early 2019, but it wasn’t one of the largest sites. As the year progressed, the operator made an effort to increase tournament and cash game options, but the site needed something big, something that would garner worldwide attention.
Enter Daniel Negreanu.
In November 2019, he announced that he signed on as the primary ambassador of GGPoker. Bryn Kenney was also a GGPoker representative, as was Felipe Ramos.
Almost immediately, they began to attract new players. And combined with special promotions and more advertising, GGPoker grew its traffic significantly. Into the spring of 2020, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier announced his partnership with GGPoker, and Fedor Holz followed a few weeks later.
Kevin Martin of Big Brother Fame
In the world of poker, plenty of people are aware of Kevin Martin. He spent a few years as a member of the PokerStars team of players and then switched over to PartyPoker for a short period last year. His livestreams became quite popular through the years.
He kept kicking around the idea of quitting poker and doing something new, but something always brought him back. This year, it was the strength of online poker during the pandemic and the offering of the World Series of Poker online on the GGNetwork. The latter offered Martin the chance to play for up to 54 WSOP gold bracelets from his home in Canada.
Evidently, Martin liked the action on GGPoker, and the operator’s executives liked what they saw of Martin. They also knew that he carried with him some of the fame from his Big Brother Canada appearances and his Season 5 win.
Martin is now the latest poker player to sign on as a member of the overall GGPoker team.
A Trio of Teams
GGPoker introduced Martin as the latest representative of the site but with another announcement of sorts. He will be a part of a new-ish team of online poker streamers called the GGSquad.
Evidently, there are three teams of sponsored pros with GGPoker, as explained in a PokerNews video.
The bigger names like Negreanu, Grospellier, Kenney, Ramos, and Holz will be the GGHeroes. A GGCrew will be a changing and expanding group of players put together to highlight a particular promotion or tournament series.
The third team is the aforementioned GGSquad, a group of players interacting with the players and gaming community throughout the week but with a special focus on Saturday Sessions. This list of livestreamers includes two names already on the site (Easterdamnz and Jetkiss) and others who are not yet there.
- Michiel Van Elsacker playing as Easterdamnz
- Torsten Brinkmann playing as Jetkiss
- Patrick Tardif also known as Irgption
- Koray Turker also known as KakiTee
- Fernando Habegger also known as JNandezPoker
The goal for each member of the team will be to produce content for YouTube and Twitch, engaging the poker community along the way and welcoming new players into the mix. Martin described them as great poker players as well as fresh, innovative people who are also relatable.
They will also play other games online, though. They will compete in trendy games like “Among Us” to create a larger gaming community, with poker remaining the foundation.
Martin also mentioned that the team will grow over time.
Current Promotions on GGPoker
Playing poker on GGPoker has its benefits, like playing alongside Martin and others. But there is also a lot of value on the site.
The October Cash Giveaway is currently underway with $5 million in several elements of the promotion. There is a daily $33K leaderboard with $1 million on top, as well as All-In-or-Fold games, Hold’em and Omaha leaderboards, and $20K daily awarded in Spin & Gold games.
Meanwhile, the Bounty Hunger Series just started on October 11 and will run through October 25 with 348 tournaments and even more “BHS Event” listings. There is a $100K leaderboard running for the series for the top 100 finishers, as well as $40 million in prize pool guarantees.
